Latest Update: 12th January 2024
On the initial day of 2024, Japan experienced the harsh impact of a formidable earthquake measuring 7.6 in magnitude. This event resulted in the devastation of numerous buildings and homes, marking the issuance of the very first tsunami warning since the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami of 2011.
While the Wancher team has, for the most part, remained unscathed, our enduring collaborative partners and Urushi artisans at Taya Shikkiten have faced substantial property damage. The earthquake not only led to the obliteration of their studio and Urushi lacquerware but also left the Taya family displaced. In this time of dire need, we earnestly seek your support and understanding on behalf of the Taya family and all others affected by this recent earthquake.
Taya Shikkiten Lacquer House stands as a pivotal artisan behind the masterful craftsmanship of our Dream Watch Urushi Line, particularly the Dream Watch Raden – a Urushi Maki-e Lacquered dial adorned with Mother of Pearl Decoration. Due to the earthquake, the future of this watch model, as well as the upcoming Wajima Lacquered Watches, remains uncertain. Nevertheless, we approach this situation with hope and optimism, relying on the steadfast support from our community and customers to aid Taya Shikkiten Lacquer House together in rebuilding their studio and preserving their craft and Urushi technique for generations to come.
Presently, Wancher Watch only has 2 Dream Watch Raden (watches crafted by Taya Shikkiten in Wajima) in stock. Please stay tuned to our newsletters and website for any updates related to changes arising from the earthquake. Your continued support means the world to us and contributes significantly to the collective effort to navigate through these challenging times.
