A Natural Lacquer Sap From the Japanese Lacquer Tree

Urushi (漆) is the sap of the urushi no ki, or Japanese lacquer tree — known botanically as Toxicodendron vernicifluum. Artisans tap mature, ten- to fifteen-year-old trees by making shallow cuts into the trunk and collecting the milky sap that seeps out as the tree heals itself. It's a slow, precise process: a single tree yields only around 200 grams of usable sap across its entire lifetime before it's retired.

Once refined, that raw sap becomes one of the hardest, most stable natural coatings in the world. Unlike varnish or paint, urushi doesn't dry through evaporation — it hardens through a humidity-driven chemical reaction involving an enzyme called laccase, which is why lacquer artisans cure their work in a humid chamber called a muro rather than open air. The result is a finish that's waterproof, resistant to acid and heat, naturally antibacterial, and — unusually for any coating — gets more lustrous with age rather than dulling.

For over a millennium, this made urushi the material of choice for tableware, furniture, temple architecture, samurai armor, and religious statuary across Japan. Today, that same sap is what gives a Japanese lacquer watch dial its unmistakable depth.

The History of Urushi

Why Japanese Artisans Have Used Lacquer for Over 12,000 Years

Japan's relationship with urushi is older than most written history. Archaeologists have identified lacquered artifacts at the Kakinoshima site in Hokkaido dating back roughly 9,000 years, and lacquer tree remains at the Torihama shell mound dating back over 12,000 years — among the oldest evidence of lacquer use anywhere in the world. Long before it was decorative, urushi was practical: Jomon-period communities used it to waterproof pottery, reinforce woven baskets, and bind tools, valuing it as a natural adhesive and preservative as much as a finish.

Its role shifted as Japanese society did. By the Heian period (794–1185), aristocrats and temple workshops had turned urushi into a genuine art form, developing maki-e — sprinkled gold and silver decoration — to adorn court accessories, Buddhist altar fittings, and ceremonial boxes. Because raw sap was scarce and labor-intensive to harvest, it was historically collected as a form of tax, and lacquerware itself became a marker of status: the finer and more elaborate the piece, the more it signaled the wealth or devotion of whoever commissioned it.

Regional lacquer schools flourished through the Edo period and beyond — Wajima, Aizu, Echizen, Tsugaru, and others each developing their own techniques, pigments, and reputations. That regional pride still shapes Japan's lacquer industry today: Wajima-nuri and Tsugaru-nuri are both recognized as Important Intangible Cultural Properties, and several of Japan's Living National Treasures in craft techniques specialize specifically in lacquerwork. It's also why the word "japan" became, in English, a historical synonym for fine lacquerware — the same way "china" came to mean porcelain.

Discover the Different Kinds of Urushi: Japanese, Chinese, and Vietnamese Lacquer

Japanese Urushi (漆)

Grown and tapped domestically — today mostly around Iwate Prefecture — Japanese urushi is prized for producing a noticeably higher gloss, luster, and hardness once applied, dried, and polished compared to sap sourced elsewhere. Supply is extremely limited: domestic urushi now accounts for only a small fraction of the raw lacquer used in Japan each year, which is why it's reserved for the work where quality can't be compromised — the restoration of national treasures like Nikko Toshogu Shrine, fine maki-e and raden pieces, and the visible top coats of premium urushi lacquer watches.

Vietnamese Lacquer (Sơn Mài)

Vietnamese lacquer draws from a different tree entirely — Toxicodendron succedaneum, known locally as cây sơn ta, grown primarily in Phu Tho province in northern Vietnam. While lacquerware itself has deep roots in Vietnam, sơn mài transformed into a distinct fine-art painting tradition in the 1930s at Hanoi's Indochina College of Fine Arts. Its signature move is sanding: artists build up dozens of colored layers, then sand them back to reveal buried colors and textures underneath, often combined with crushed eggshell (used to achieve a true white, which lacquer can't produce on its own) and mother-of-pearl inlay. The effect is more painterly and atmospheric than the crisp, graphic gold work of Japanese maki-e.

Chinese Lacquer (Qi / 漆)

Chinese lacquer, or qi, comes from the same tree species and shares a nearly identical chemical makeup with Japanese urushi. It's also, historically, where Japan's own lacquer tradition likely traces its roots. Because Chinese sap is produced at much greater volume and lower cost, China now supplies the vast majority of the raw urushi consumed in Japan — even most "Japanese lacquerware" uses Chinese sap for base and mid coats, with domestic Japanese urushi applied only for the final, visible layer on premium pieces. Stylistically, Chinese lacquer art is also known for carved techniques like tihong, where thick layers are built up and carved into relief — a very different visual language from Japan's flatter, sprinkle-decorated surfaces.

Maki-e and Raden: The Techniques That Turn Urushi Into Art

Two decorative techniques define the top tier of Japanese lacquer craftsmanship, and both show up on the finest lacquer dials.

Maki-e

literally "sprinkled picture" — involves dusting fine gold or silver powder onto wet lacquer before it's sealed under further coats and polished back to reveal the design. Raden takes the opposite approach, inlaying paper-thin slices of mother-of-pearl shell into the lacquer surface, where they catch light in shifting rainbow color as the piece moves. Combine both on a single work and you get what artisans call maki-e raden — historically reserved for imperial court and temple commissions because of how labor-intensive it is to execute well.

On a full-size lacquer box or screen, that's demanding enough. On a watch dial only a few centimeters across, it becomes something closer to miniature painting: every fleck of gold and every sliver of shell placed under magnification, by hand, with essentially no margin for error.
